Don’t you hate how sometimes you have something anime related to talk about but no one around to talk to? You can’t just go up to anyone and talk about anime with them either. Sure, you might get lucky and they’ll end up liking it too. Or at the very least they’ll just be indifferent towards it. But despite how anime seems to be getting more popular there are still a lot of people who hate it for some reason. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing to be someone who doesn’t like anime as long as you gave it a chance. But the people I’m talking about aren’t like that. They just seem to hate anime either because they’ve only seen the bad side of it, or because they have misconceptions based on what they’ve heard even if they haven’t actually seen any anime.

One of the common things people say is that anime is just for kids and older people shouldn’t be watching it. Of course, there is anime for kids out there the same way there are western cartoons made for kids. But there’s so much more than that. Yet people still lump all anime together like this because they’ve only seen the popular mainstream shows. But there’s plenty of stuff for people of all ages. Chances are if there’s something you like there’s probably an anime about it. If you want a good action series and don’t mind the violence then check out something like Black Lagoon or Berserk. If you like horror/mystery stories and movies then Higurashi and Another are both good. There are also tons of good romance anime for the people who like that kind of thing. Toradora, Lovely Complex, and Clannad are all good. There are way to many for me to name all the good ones but Clannad is probably the best out of those three. At least in my opinion it is.

Sometimes people will also say that they don’t like the art style. But that doesn’t make sense to me either. Anime isn’t a genre, so it doesn’t have just one singular art style. But someone can’t really know that if they’ve only seen popular and mainstream stuff. Like I was saying earlier, there are lots of different kinds of anime. People just need to find what kind they like. The art in One Piece is completely different from the art in Berserk. Something like Revolutionary Girl Utena has a completely different art style from shows like Attack on Titan or Sword Art Online. People just need to find a style of art that they like. If they can’t find one that’s okay, but that doesn’t mean they should give up without ever looking.

One more thing is that people will say that it’s all perverted, or just refer to it as “anime porn”. Which is a hundred percent not the case. This is just another case of generalization and people thinking all anime are the same. They’ll watch something like Highschool of the Dead and think all anime are full of fanservice like that. If they would just look at the bigger picture for once they’d probably find an anime that they like. But sadly it seems like there aren’t a lot of people who are willing to do that. They’re content to just go on hating something they barely know anything about.

Finally, it can sometimes be the fans of anime that ruin it for other people who are trying to get into it. I’m not saying all anime fans do this but just a few can ruin the reputation of everyone else in the community. These hardcore fans will attack anyone who says something even remotely bad about anime or sometimes even Japan in general. Sometimes the people who they’re attacking had no idea they said anything wrong. But the way these people go about responding to that is completely the wrong way. Now, I don’t think we should just let people have misconceptions about anime. But instead of getting mad at them for it we should try to help them learn the right way. If that doesn’t work we should just ignore them. Arguing with people like that just makes the anime community look even worse and that isn’t something any of us want. People have a bad enough view of us as it is.

And that’s it for this post. Do you all agree with me? Is it possible for a normal person to start liking anime? Or are they all a lost cause that we should just forget about? I’d like to hope that isn’t the case but if it is then I suppose there isn’t anything we can do about it. I hope everyone liked today’s post and I’ll see you all in the next one.
